I love the way Denise Riley’s poem, turns and mirrors, doubles and reflects again, in philosophy in feeling, in language. it inflammed my thoughts with resonant themes and sparked new pathways of writing when I came upon it.
reading it again today got me thinking about turning. our lives are dizzy with it, at times one volta after another after another. in childhood, i learned to trust music first, language slipped and slithered, no one quite spoke the truth. hypervigilance dug out roads away from ambiguity, stretched so far i could prophet layers of a persons hidden life from one sentence. was this a gift or a curse my young self mused? it was at this moment i made a turn, inside and closer and the questions fell away. i realise now it was the beginning of my own relationship with language, a still fresh water speaking back.
